Description: | Dark legs, black primaries, white secondaries, and black-banded tail. |
Adult (Breeding): | Black crown, white forehead, white supercilium, black eyestripe, yellowish ear coverts, and black and brown-red belly patch. |
Adult (Non-breeding): | Duller head pattern and white belly. |
Juvenile: | Browner than non-breeding adult with pale feather edges; head and neck streaked. |
Similar Species: | Juvenile differs from juvenile Eurasian Dotterel by less contrasting head and breast pattern, dark legs, and lack of pale breast band. |
Behavior: | Often found in flocks of other lapwings and plovers. |
Habitat: | Shores of ponds in semideserts and mountain steppe; wet meadows, river banks. |
Food: | Invertebrates. |
