Description: Sandpiper with greenish legs and long slightly-upturned bill. In flight, shows dark wings, white back and rump wedge.
Adult (Breeding): Gray upperparts with black markings; white below with dark flecks on neck and upper breast.
Adult (Non-breeding): Pale gray above; white below.
Juvenile: Browner above with pale feather edges.
Similar Species: Differs from all other sandpipers by combination of large size and green legs.
Behavior: Often solitary.
Habitat: Ponds, lake shores.
Food: Invertebrates, small fish.
