| Adult: |
In flight show large areas of white on upper primaries. |
| Adult (Breeding): |
Black hood, orange-yellow bill with black band and variable amount of red. |
| Adult (Non-breeding): |
White head with grayish eye patch; bill and legs duller. |
| Juvenile: |
Whitish head and underparts, blackish bill, and dark hindneck. Brown mantle with pale scalloping on feather edges replaced with gray by fall. |
| Similar Species: |
At all ages differs from other large gulls by large size, sloping forehead, broad arched wings, long bill and legs. |

Often seen in flocks with Armenian Gulls. |
