Description: | Pale gray mantle and upperwings with white wingtips; red bill and red-black legs. |
Adult (Breeding): | Black hood. |
Adult (Non-breeding): | White head with variable black streaks flaring behind eye. |
First Winter: | Blackish band on secondaries and tail. Blackish bill and legs. |
Immature: | Like adult but with variable black wingtip markings. |
Similar Species: | Differs from other gulls by broad blunt pale wings, thick bill, and head pattern. |
Behavior: | Often gregarious on migration. |
Habitat: | Ponds, lakes, marshes. |
Food: | Invertebrates, fish. |
