Resident Status: Year-round resident
Abundance: Uncommon
Length:14 cm, Wing Span:20-22 cm
Distribution Map: Map 331.
Adult: Red-brown crown, black ear spot, eyestripe, and throat patch; white cheek and neck collar. Wings mostly red-brown with two white wingbars.
Juvenile: Paler with gray-brown crown, faint ear spot, and duller wings.
Similar Species: Differs from House and Spanish Sparrows by black ear spot.
Behavior: Gregarious when not breeding.
Habitat: Widespread below mountain meadows.
Food: Seeds, small invertebrates.
Nest: Loose ball of grass in cavity of tree, cliff, nest box, or old crow nest.
Eggs: 19 mm, 2-7, white, gray spots.
