Flight Characteristics: | Long broad wings with wider bulging secondaries. Adult is dark overall; golden head and yellow legs visible at close range. Juvenile has white at base of tail and wing patches which become smaller with increasing age. Soars and glides with straight wings held forward and raised slightly. Flight appears powerful. |

Description: | Huge dark raptor with yellowish crown and hindneck. Has broad wings that narrow near body and proportionately longer tail than other Aquila species. |
Adult: | Dark brown overall with broad pale band on upperwing. Tail shows brown-gray mottling at base and broad blackish terminal band. |
Juvenile: | Like adult but with white wing patches on underwing and white basal half of tail. |
Behavior: | Hunts by swooping on prey from considerable heights or from low-level flight. |
Habitat: | Mountains, cliffs, deep gorges, forest, steppe, alpine meadows. |
Food: | Medium to large mammals, birds, reptiles; carrion. |
Nest: | Large platform of branches with grass or other green vegetation on cliff ledge. |
Eggs: | 76 mm, 2, dull white, red-brown spots. |
