Shy pale duck. Grayish-brown overall dappled with yellowish-white spots and bars. Dark patch around eye. Male has a short uneven crest erected during courtship displays. |

Usually seen in pairs or small groups close to cover. Swims with front part of body held low and tail slightly cocked. |

Small ponds and marshes bordered by emergent vegetation. |
