Boldly patterned, crested lapwing. |
| Adult (Breeding): |
Both sexes have black crest and bib; glossy greenish upperparts with purple sheen in sunlight, white lower breast and belly, and broad rounded wingtips. Male has longer crest, brighter plumage, and blacker head than female. |
| Adult (Non-breeding): |
Yellowish face, white chin and throat. |
| Juvenile: |
Like non-breeding adult but shorter crest, brownish breast, pale feather edges on back and wing coverts. |
| Behavior: |
Frequent vocal and elaborate tumbling aerial displays in spring. |

Shallow wetlands, wet meadows, irrigated fields. |
