Length:28-31 cm, Wing Span:82-87 cm

Description: Boldly patterned, crested lapwing.
Adult (Breeding): Both sexes have black crest and bib; glossy greenish upperparts with purple sheen in sunlight, white lower breast and belly, and broad rounded wingtips. Male has longer crest, brighter plumage, and blacker head than female.
Adult (Non-breeding): Yellowish face, white chin and throat.
Juvenile: Like non-breeding adult but shorter crest, brownish breast, pale feather edges on back and wing coverts.
Behavior: Frequent vocal and elaborate tumbling aerial displays in spring.
Habitat: Shallow wetlands, wet meadows, irrigated fields.
Food: Invertebrates.
Nest: Shallow, loosely lined ground scrape, or platform of dry grass.
Eggs: 47 mm, 4, pale brown, black blotches.
