Resident Status: Casual
Length:53-69 cm, Wing Span:106-116 cm
Distribution Map: Map 1.
Description: Thin slightly upturned bill.
Adult (Breeding): Brown-red throat patch and uniformly gray back.
Adult (Non-breeding): White face and foreneck; pale finely-speckled back. May retain portions of the breeding plumage throughout the year.
Similar Species: Differs from Arctic Loon by upturned bill and in non-breeding plumage by little contrast between white foreneck and dark hindneck.
Behavior: Holds head tilted up while swimming. Can take flight without running start.
Habitat: Lakes, reservoirs, large rivers.
Food: Fish.
