| Adult (Breeding): |
Brown-red throat patch and uniformly gray back. |
| Adult (Non-breeding): |
White face and foreneck; pale finely-speckled back. May retain portions of the breeding plumage throughout the year. |
| Similar Species: |
Differs from Arctic Loon by upturned bill and in non-breeding plumage by little contrast between white foreneck and dark hindneck. |

Holds head tilted up while swimming. Can take flight without running start. |
