| Description: | Sandpiper with greenish legs and long slightly-upturned bill. In flight, shows dark wings, white back and rump wedge. |
| Adult (Breeding): | Gray upperparts with black markings; white below with dark flecks on neck and upper breast. |
| Adult (Non-breeding): | Pale gray above; white below. |
| Juvenile: | Browner above with pale feather edges. |
| Similar Species: | Differs from all other sandpipers by combination of large size and green legs. |
| Behavior: | Often solitary. |
| Habitat: | Ponds, lake shores. |
| Food: | Invertebrates, small fish. |
