Length:36-38 cm, Wing Span:92-100 cm

Description: Pale gray mantle and upperwings with white wingtips; red bill and red-black legs.
Adult (Breeding): Black hood.
Adult (Non-breeding): White head with variable black streaks flaring behind eye.
First Winter: Blackish band on secondaries and tail. Blackish bill and legs.
Immature: Like adult but with variable black wingtip markings.
Similar Species: Differs from other gulls by broad blunt pale wings, thick bill, and head pattern.
Behavior: Often gregarious on migration.
Habitat: Ponds, lakes, marshes.
Food: Invertebrates, fish.
