| Description: | Straight dark bill. |
| Adult (Breeding): | Yellow ear tufts extend to rear of crown; red-brown neck. |
| Adult (Non-breeding): | Dark gray above, with white cheeks and throat; black crown extends to but not below eye. |
| Behavior: | Prefers larger bodies of water in winter. Often occurs singly or in small flocks. |
| Habitat: | Lakes, reservoirs, marshes, fish ponds. |
| Food: | Aquatic invertebrates, small fish, vegetation. |
