| Adult (Breeding): | Yellow ear tufts; black head, neck, and breast. |
| Adult (Non-breeding): | Dark gray above with black of crown extending below eye; underparts paler. |
| Behavior: | Often feeds by picking food from surface of water with bill. |
| Habitat: | Lakes, reservoirs, marshes, fish ponds. |
| Food: | Aquatic invertebrates, vegetation. |
| Nest: | Floating platform in large areas of emergent vegetation. |
