Abundance: Common
Length:28-34 cm, Wing Span:56-60 cm

Description: Slim bill with upturned lower mandible.
Adult (Breeding): Yellow ear tufts; black head, neck, and breast.
Adult (Non-breeding): Dark gray above with black of crown extending below eye; underparts paler.
Behavior: Often feeds by picking food from surface of water with bill.
Habitat: Lakes, reservoirs, marshes, fish ponds.
Food: Aquatic invertebrates, vegetation.
Nest: Floating platform in large areas of emergent vegetation.
Eggs: 44 mm, 3-4, dull white.
