Adult: | Red-brown crown, black ear spot, eyestripe, and throat patch; white cheek and neck collar. Wings mostly red-brown with two white wingbars. |
Juvenile: | Paler with gray-brown crown, faint ear spot, and duller wings. |
Similar Species: | Differs from House and Spanish Sparrows by black ear spot. |
Behavior: | Gregarious when not breeding. |
Habitat: | Widespread below mountain meadows. |
Food: | Seeds, small invertebrates. |
Nest: | Loose ball of grass in cavity of tree, cliff, nest box, or old crow nest. |
Eggs: | 19 mm, 2-7, white, gray spots. |
