| Description: | In flight, shows dark upper belly contrasting with white lower belly and undertail coverts. |
| Adult: | Black head with red-brown cheek outlined in white, red-brown breast, black upperparts and belly, white flank stripe and lower belly.Tiny bill. |
| Juvenile: | Slightly paler overall; upperwing coverts with broader pale edging. |
| Behavior: | Agile flight. Forages in steppe and crop fields. |
| Habitat: | Fish ponds, lakes, steppe, cultivated fields. |
