Abundance: Uncommon
Length:51-66 cm, Wing Span:80-95 cm

Description: Male: head and upper hindneck brown. White stripe on head extending down to white breast and belly. Rear flank yellowish-white. Long pointed needle-like tail. Female: brown with pale head and throat, gray bill, and pointed tail.
Behavior: Swims high in water, often with straight neck and tail raised. Up-ends with tail depressed.
Habitat: Lakes, shallow rivers, ponds.
Food: Aquatic plants, invertebrates.
