| Description: | Male: head and upper hindneck brown. White stripe on head extending down to white breast and belly. Rear flank yellowish-white. Long pointed needle-like tail. Female: brown with pale head and throat, gray bill, and pointed tail. |
| Behavior: | Swims high in water, often with straight neck and tail raised. Up-ends with tail depressed. |
