| Description: | Male: red bill, orange-brown head, black breast and undertail coverts, and white flanks. Female: brown with dark crown, off-white cheeks and throat. |
| Behavior: | Up-ends more often than dives. Walks easily; may feed on land. |
| Habitat: | Lakes bordered with reeds and sedges, marshes, rivers. |
| Food: | Aquatic plants, invertebrates, small fish, amphibians. |
| Nest: | Ground scrape lined with grass and down in reeds or shrubs near water. |
| Eggs: | 59 mm, 5-10, pale gray. |
