Resident Status: Year-round resident
Abundance: Uncommon
Length:53-57 cm, Wing Span:84-88 cm

Description: Male: red bill, orange-brown head, black breast and undertail coverts, and white flanks. Female: brown with dark crown, off-white cheeks and throat.
Behavior: Up-ends more often than dives. Walks easily; may feed on land.
Habitat: Lakes bordered with reeds and sedges, marshes, rivers.
Food: Aquatic plants, invertebrates, small fish, amphibians.
Nest: Ground scrape lined with grass and down in reeds or shrubs near water.
Eggs: 59 mm, 5-10, pale gray.
