Male: dark green head with slightly elongated nape feathers, black back; pale pink or white underparts. Female: brown-red head and upper neck contrasts with pale lower neck and underparts; gray upperparts. |
| Similar Species: |
Females differ from Red-breasted Merganser by sharp contrast between head and lower neck color, clearly-defined white chin, and in flight, by paler underparts and an entirely white wing patch. |
